Sarah from Empress Moth in Victoria, Australia dyes our Thank You Mother clothing range with non-toxic botanical plant dyes.
The colours are created with the following natural ingredients:
Deep Space = Madder root, Oak Gall, Iron
Olive = Onion skins & Oak Gall
Chartreuse = Marigold petals
Indigo = Indigofera tinctoria
Mushroom = Black Walnut, Cutch (acacia tree), Iron
Pinot = Cutch (Acacia Wood), Madder root
Eggplant = Madder root, Iron
Scarlet = Madder root & Marigold petals
Sarah has developed several different techniques over the years in dyeing, printing and pigment extraction. She uses variations of botanical printing, natural dyeing, cold bath dyeing, and a few other techniques of her own invention.The plant dyeing process involves mordanting the hemp cloth with a self developed natural recipe, then dipping the garments into pre-prepared dye vats.
